The water wall is a key heating element in the boiler, made up of multiple rows of steel tubes arranged around the furnace chamber. Inside these tubes, water or steam circulates, while outside they absorb heat from the flames in the furnace.
Its main role is to capture radiant heat from high-temperature combustion gases, helping the fluid inside move upward and gradually turn into steam through heating.
Originally used mainly for cooling the furnace, water walls have evolved into the primary heating surface in today's boilers thanks to their efficient heat transfer. They are especially important in high-capacity boilers, where they can absorb 40% to 50%—or even more—of the total heat in the system.
